Risk & R Multiples

Why R

An R multiple measures a trade against what it could have lost. Risk 1R and make 2R, and the trade paid twice its risk. It puts a $50 scalp and a $2,000 swing on the same scale, so your stats show your process, not your position size. Tanto works out R from one input, your stop. Entry and exit already come from your broker.

Recording a Stop

Open any trade. The Risk card has two fields:

  • Stop: where your protective stop was. This is what R needs.
  • Target: where you planned to take profit. Optional, and only used for Planned R.

No need to click Edit. Type a number, press Enter or click away, and it saves. Each field has a small unit tag you can click to switch between points from entry, price level, or dollars for the whole position. Tanto remembers the unit you last used on each account.

Record the stop while you're still in the trade. Open the position from the Trade Grid and fill in the Risk card. The stop carries through scale-ins and partial closes, so R is ready when the trade closes.

What the Card Shows

  • Trade risk: the dollars at risk (stop distance × contracts × value per point)
  • Initial target: the dollar value of your target, if you set one
  • Planned R: your reward-to-risk at entry
  • Realized R: what the trade actually paid, in R, after commissions

Default Risk Per Account

If you risk the same dollar amount on every trade, you don't have to type a stop each time. Turn on Default risk per trade when creating or editing an account. Trades without their own stop use that amount.

When you size up, add a New amount with a From date. Trades from that date on use the new amount, and earlier trades keep the old one, so your history doesn't change.

Which Risk a Trade Uses

First match wins:

  1. The trade's own stop
  2. The base risk of its setup (see Setups & Tags)
  3. The account's default risk for that trade's date
  4. None, so that trade has no R

The R View

Pick R multiple from the unit menu in the top bar (it shows $ or R) and every money figure across the Dashboard, Calendar, Reports and each trade switches to R. MFE and MAE become R as well. Switch back to Dollars whenever you like. Tanto remembers your choice on each device.

Commissions, fees, volume, quantities and prices stay in dollars, because they're facts about the trade, not measures of it. Open positions show live dollar PnL until they close.

A trade showing a dash in the R view has no risk recorded: no stop, no setup base risk, and no account default. It's left out of R stats, but still counts in dollars. Add any one of those and it gets an R.
